The world's coldest man-made temperature is about 38 trillionths of a degree above absolute zero. Scientists reached this tiny temperature by cooling a cloud of atoms with lasers and magnetic fields. The atoms slow down until they move almost not at all.

Absolute zero is 0 Kelvin, or -273.15°C. It is the lowest temperature allowed by the laws of physics. Scientists cannot reach absolute zero exactly, but they can get incredibly close.

At these temperatures, atoms behave in unusual ways. They can form a special state of matter called a Bose-Einstein condensate, where many atoms act like one large quantum object.
