Skunk Smell Chemistry: Why Their Spray Smells So Terrible

Skunk spray has such a powerful smell mainly because it contains chemicals called thiols. These are sulfur-containing compounds known for their strong odors.

When a skunk feels threatened, it can spray an oily liquid from scent glands near its tail. Several thiols in this spray produce the sharp, rotten-egg-like smell people recognize immediately.

Our noses can detect some thiols at extremely low concentrations. That means only a tiny amount can create a noticeable odor.

Here is an interesting detail: skunk spray also contains compounds called thioacetates. These can slowly turn into smelly thiols when they react with water, which can make the odor seem to return after something gets wet.

If a person or pet is sprayed, ordinary water may not remove the oily chemicals well. A suitable odor-neutralizing treatment can work better than simply trying to cover the smell with perfume or another fragrance.
